7. Think it sounds glamorous to work as an
actor or an extra in a major movie? Check this: the prom scene was
filmed at Seattle's Century Ballroom in the summer of 1998. During
the 3-day shoot, the temperature skyrocketed to over 90 degrees!
More than three hundred extras were called in, wearing full prom
regalia and corsages and absolutely melting in the heat.
8. Heath Ledger is originally from Perth, Australia. Since
he went to high school outside of the U.S., he wasn't sure what to
expect when he arrived on location. "In Australia, we always see
American high school movies, and they always have yellow school
buses. I just didn't think they really had [them] until I came over
here and saw them for myself!" There was initial concern on the part
of the producers about Heath's accent, but as director Gil Junger
put it, it works because "it makes him more interesting, mysterious,
and sexy."
9. Fellow CS-celeb Andrew Keegan plays Joey Donner, a high
school stud who desperately wants to go out with Bianca. Commenting
on Andrew's work, the director noted, "I cast Andrew because I felt,
in many ways, he was this guy. He's cool and very confident about
the way he looks. I'm sure he's very confident with women, which is
how this character needs to be. The delicate balance that I've been
trying to get with Andrew (and have gotten because he's a good
actor), is how do you be cocky and overly sure of yourself, and not
seem smarmy? I've tried to keep him grounded so that the audience
will know that inside, he really is a good guy."
10. Can you imagine Larisa playing a shrew? According to
producer Andrew Lazar, initially "Julia Stiles and Larisa Oleynik
both liked the character of Kat. When Julia walked in, it was so
clear that she was dead-on Kat. However, Larisa is so
extraordinarily talented that we wanted to see her as Bianca."
Director Gil Junger agreed, saying, "Larisa lights up the screen.
She has a difficult part, because she has to play a girl that the
audience doesn't particularly like in the beginning because she's
materialistic and self-centered... She's a real person, and she too
is just hiding. That's a fine line for an actor to walk, and Larisa
does it beautifully."
