Shooting Gallery.
Yeah Yeah we know it seems pretty glamorous to be taping TV shows and having interviews and doing photo-shoots and other stuff like that, but for actresses like Larisa Oleynik there's also a lot of hard work involved behind-the-scenes. We thought it would be a good idea, not to mention about time, to take you guys backstage at a recent photo-shoot.
Now don't get us wrong, it's not the worst thing in the world but if you want to try doing about 20 outfit and make-up changes as well as smiling and pouting and posturing into a camera for 10 hours straight you'll soon find out that your going need all of your patience to get through the whole day. As you might imagine, Larisa was a total professional and with a little help from some good food, a killer loud sound system and some of her favorite candies (think sour gummi bears) she smiled, joked and laughed her way all through the day.
We were hanging out with Larisa on a cold day in mid-December to shoot a whole bunch of new pictures for her website.
Before the shoot even starts, one of the hardest things to arrange is finding a day and a location that works well for everyone. From Larisa, to the photographer to the make-up artist to the production assistants, everyone's schedule has to be coordinated and booked in advance. Our very cool photographer Mikki Willis, went to check out at least three or four different studios, trying to decide which one would get us the most shots and the best locations.
In order to get as many creative shots as possible, it's very important for a studio to be able to provide lots of different textures, shapes, and colors for the crew to work with. After being bumped out of one place, (it was a city permit thang, the room next door to ours had live tigers in it!) Mikki settled on a very cool warehouse style studio in Glendale near Los Angeles.
The day of the shoot starts at about 8:00am. Having known Larisa for the last few years we call her on the cell-phone to make sure she's awake and ready to go. It was a good thing we did because her alarm hadn't gone off and she was sound asleep! After hanging out while she takes a quick shower and pulls some clothes together, it's time to head to the studio.
The crew are ready and have the lights set up when we arrive at 9:30am. Photographer extraordinaire Mikki and stylist Evie talk about plans for the days shoot. Mikki and Evi have shot many of the top stars over the last few years including Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Danielle Fishel.
Evie starts to pick out the first of many different outfits for Larisa. Over the next few hours she'll wear a combo of clothes that Evie picks out, some things she's brought from home and also some clothes supplied by Alloy.com
Larisa settles into the make-up chair. Powder and lipstick applied by the talented Frida, our Swedish make-up girl. To create all the different looks for all the different shots Larisa will be made-up, touched-up and buffed-up about 15 times today.
Evie helps Larisa to find her mark for one of the first shots of the day. It's kind of hard to see but later in the shoot Larisa will use the big white floor and wall in the background (it's known as a cyclone) to create some very cool shots using her shadow.
Larisa sits on the floor waiting for Mikki to start shooting.
The photographer gets down low to fire off some test shots. The colors and textures in the background are created using colored gels and filters which are then projected onto an old iron door.
Very Gwen Stefani dontcha think? Check out one the final shots that made it onto the site.
In between set ups, Larisa catches up with friends on her cell phone and before the emails start flooding in, no we can't give you her number!
Miki looks like he's conducting an orchestra! Larisa wears a fluffy blue coat and curls up in a fluffy blue chair both available right now in the Alloy store.
Larisa curls up as Mikki zooms down.
Picture perfect! The combination of the photographer and the subject result in another incredible shot.
Larisa slips into a purple tied-died dress and Evie fixes her hair for the next shot.
When you're doing a photo-shoot it's all about the timing. Here Mikki captures the look that he's been waiting for.
All the different areas (and textures) within the studio are put to good use. Larisa stands in front of one of the big metal doors.
Evie and Frida move in for some touch-ups as Mikki gets ready for the next shot.
Both photographer and subject get down and dirty on the studio floor. The production assistants take a light meter reading to make sure it's just perfect! [save1 ] \
No she's not sleeping, although the shoot does last almost ten hours. You can just see the camera lens in the bottom right-hand corner.
Right on target, Mikki grabs another killer shot.
